Girls who go to secondary are SIX TIMES less likely to be forced to be married as children, they are 80% less likely to become pregnant during their teenage years, and 94% less likely to undergo FGM.
FAQ
All school-related expenses are included in your sponsorship. Everything from school supplies to uniforms, transportation and pocket money, as well as tuition and fees, are covered.
HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED?
FK staff and board members receive recommendations from teachers and community members. Criteria include risk of loss of education, academic performance, and parent participation. Students are then asked to fill out an application, a home visit is conducted, and the student and their family is interviewed.
WHAT ABOUT THE STUDENT’S FAMILY?
Each student’s family is counseled and educated about the benefits of education. Once they are in support of the sponsorship, parents sign an agreement not to force a girl to undergo FGM or be married off. Students also sign an agreement to dedicate themselves to their studies and participate in FK activities as leaders and role models.
Sponsored students’ families are also enrolled in our Family Enrichment program, which involves a social worker and partner organization following the family closely and working with them to improve circumstances for the student at home. This is accomplished through homestead improvements, economic development activities, and more.
HOW WILL KNOW HOW MY STUDENT IS DOING?
Sponsored students are followed closely by our Social Worker, and updates with photos are sent to sponsors each term!
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Full student sponsorships are $120/month, but we offer supporters the opportunity to spilt the cost of sponsorship with a friend or family member for $60/mo.
